Field notes - printing with turmeric. A curious process.

I’ve seen a few examples of this over the last couple of years. Decided to try it today - with the ingredients bought from the local Spanish supermarket!

The light sensitive part a mix of turmeric and alcohol painted onto art paper. And the developer/fixer a solution of bicarbonate of soda. That’s it.

The turmeric solution is painted onto the paper and allowed to dry. Your subject matter is placed onto the paper under glass. The exposure time is 4-5 hours in bright sun. This would be difficult in London!

Then it is developed in the bicarbonate of soda solution, rinsed in water for a couple of minutes and left to dry.

A curiosity more than anything, maybe used as a first step before making a digital copy to manipulate further. These are phone copies. But I was surprised how simple and basic this is.

As I’m on holiday, my camera equipment is limited to wide lenses, a cranky old tripod and no computer. But some phone grabs of the camera screen with magnified image. I should be able to pull a lot more detail into the highlights at some point. Should make an acceptable A4 print.

Much more atmospheric than the solar eclipse a few weeks ago too. Freezing cold, standing on the roof, with a cup of coffee and the sound of waves breaking on the beach.

There’s another eclipse in the early hours of tomorrow, around 04:00. Not sure I’ll be up for that, but some spectacular cloud forms today and this evening.

I do have fond memories of the original SX-70 Polaroid film, which I used at college. It was more robust with more saturated colours. But with a bit of tinkering, you can get interesting results from the current product.

Snorkelling and trying the DJI Action 5 camera underwater. Seems to work well. I normally use it for boat action shots. The Atlantic seems to have much cleaner water than the River Thames, where photos are just brown!

Pretty much shooting blind as a combination of hazy goggles, small screen and lighting conditions make the camera image hard to see. But it reveals a lot of details you’re not aware of at the time.

The Temple, Gunnersbury Park. We held our wedding

The Temple, Gunnersbury Park. We held our wedding reception here quite a few years ago and I cycle past it most days heading to the river. It’s not our anniversary btw, I just stopped as the light was nice today! And they’ve cleared a lot of the weed.

But it is the park’s 100th anniversary. Lots of notices are dotted around with historic photos or paintings. The sign says the sixth president of the United States dined here, which I didn’t know. But I prefer the fact not mentioned that Peter Cook and Dudley Moore filmed a sketch here in the early 1960’s!

That’s how we found it, as a film location listing at Ealing Council. The interior of the portico was painted orange at the time. It’s now the sober white you see in the photos. I’ve not seen the building used for anything in years.
