Very sad to hear that Beth Chatto, nurserywoman, author and one of the most influential horticulturists of recent times, has died, aged 94. Her belief in natural planting, working with nature in local environments has been of great significance to modern gardening. I was lucky enough to photograph her a few times in her garden in Essex, and these portraits were taken in 2008. From 6 years ago this week – time flies! I was lucky enough to have two photos selected for exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in Milan with another British photographer, Nicky De Gruchy, in a show called ‘Small Garden’. And even more lucky as it was from an introductory email found in the spam filter!

Rev Richard Coles, presenter on BBC Radio Four’s Saturday Live, once described the plastic bags suspended along the roadside on his drive home as looking like “Unfortunate wraiths snagged in trees”. Sadly a common feature along the River Thames. More ‘wildling’ trees along the Thames footpath near Mortlake. A ‘wildling’ Plane tree growing out of the cobbled embankment along the River Thames between Chiswick and Kew.
From the archive : French lavender – 3 colour gum bichromate prints c1998. The top image was used by Sainsbury’s as a point of sale display stand…though for what, I don’t know! This was before my activity in the digital age, so I was never sent reference material.

The corner of my mum’s plant hospital. Apparently I won the large cactus in the middle at a school summer fair when I was about 8 years old. It was ‘confiscated’ as I didn’t look after it. Monstera deliciosa or cheese plant. London Plane tree – high tide, overlooking Vauxhall Bridge.
