Garden of the Year with Gardeners’ World

A gallery from a big shoot last summer for Gardeners’ World, where I was lucky enough to visit gardens as far as The Lake District, North and West Wales, and the South Coast, for their Garden of the Year competition.  The March issue of the magazine arrived today, with the final set of images from the 2016 winners, and details of how to enter this year. The ‘Small Space’ winner and Judges Choice was Steve Moodey’s garden in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The ‘Family Plot’ winner (and People’s Choice) was Magda D’Ingeo’s garden in Reigate, with the ‘Wildlife Garden’ category taken by Pam Woodall in Poole, Dorset. Thanks […]

Screaming Lord Sutch, 1990

From the archives, something shot for Country Living in 1990. Not sure why Screaming Lord Sutch was presenting awards at a fitness event, but there you go! He was a nice chap. The Man v Horse Marathon at Llanwrtyd Wells. An annual event started in 1980, prize money is offered to a runner beating the fastest horse. Quite a feat, but has been achieved on a few occasions.

The River Brent

I’ve walked along stretches of the River Brent and Grand Union Canal for many years, often as a convenient place to test cameras, equipment and new films. In 2009 I took some test shots for the Garden Photographer of the Year Competition. Since then, I have added to these whilst on walks, sometimes with friends, sometimes solo.  Not originally a planned project, it has evolved into one, following the course of the river from its humble source, not much more than a drainage channel, to joining the Thames at Brentford. The full set can be seen in the projects section […]

Little Britain, EC1A in 1985

From two rolls of 35mm Kodak Tri X shot in 1985. More reference shots whilst searching for a car location in the City, near the Museum of London. This street,  Little Britain, was boarded up, ready for demolition. I can’t remember why, but the location was never used in the end.

Butler’s Wharf, 1985

From the archives, probably 1985, these shots were from a car shoot recce. I was after an area large enough to accommodate four or five cars and vividly remember cursing this wrecked Citröen 2CV for being in the way. In the background there is the original Butler’s Wharf building. The camera position is where the newer Butler’s Wharf apartments now stand.

Weybridge Winter Head Race, 21.1.17

Some images taken today along the Walton-on-Thames stretch of the River Thames during the Weybridge Winter Head Race 2017. With crews from Putney Town Rowing Club, Tideway Scullers and Team Keane.

Concertina book

Always a bit nervous folding nearly 3 metres of paper! I made the first of these concertina books in 2014, illustrating the Wordsworth poem “Upon Westminster Bridge”. (Top left). This was a one off. I made three more recently, this time illustrating another Wordsworth poem, “Remembrance of Collins” (Top right). Both are linked to the Thames, and are part of evolving photo ideas with connections to the river.

From the archives, 1986

One of those moments when you’re sitting around the office wondering how to illustrate a tame article about car lights, when someone says, “I know….”. Probably from 1986. We tried to do this in Notting Hill, but were accosted twice by drug dealers, and got spooked. So we ended up in Bermondsey, where a local resident called the police, thinking we were shooting something a bit more hardcore. When they arrived it was quite obvious they weren’t there to ask us to move…they wanted to watch. And were sadly disappointed!
