1. Burdock seed heads.
2. Winter aconite. I found a small group in the gloom by Kew Rail Bridge, peeping through the leaf mould. I've not seen these along the river before. Not fully open yet, maybe another few days.
3. Nettle in flower, growing out of the pointing in a wall.
4. Not sure of this tree's identity. Growing out of the abutment near Kew Road Bridge.

Winter or summer, you will rarely beat Hamamelis (witch hazel) and Daphne on perfume. Beautiful!

There was even enough warmth today to bring out a butterfly which was a surprise.

I have a few old botanical books bought specifical

I have a few old botanical books bought specifically for the colour plates, which were made using early lithographic or gravure processes. Getting accurate colour even nowadays can be a proofing nightmare. But the inaccuracies have a beauty in themselves. I've tried on many occasions to find this 'look', both in the darkroom or computer without success.

I love the story behind this particular book. Conceived during the second world war in occupied Holland, it was eventually published in 1948. Printed on 'Victory' paper with 120 full colour plates and dedicated to H.M. Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands.

Amazing that something of such beauty would emerge from the chaos at that time.

Observations in Gunnersbury Park during last week's cold snap.

1. Catkins, lamb tails. Quite a few trees produce these. I think these are hazel.
2. Dawn redwood.
3. Frosty leaves.
4. Fragments. Clouds and broken ice.
5. Horse chestnut with Brentford Skyline.
6. Woodland by Potomac Pond and London plane trees.
7. 'The Scary Tree' as my daughters used to call it. Or more correctly, a Japanese Pagoda tree.
8. Sunset - the Potomac Pond and wooded area on the edge of the old golf course.

Strand-on-the-Green and Oliver's Island.

Apparently a road ran along the front of the buildings in the last frame. This was gradually washed away by the increased flow when the original Putney Bridge was replaced by the present one. The old bridge spans were narrow and this choked the river.

Gunnersbury Park.

Winter is nearly always the best time to photograph trees. In the summer a continuous canopy often blends and hides distinct forms. This time of year you can see the shapes, skeletons and details that are hidden in deep shade later on.

1. London plane tree avenue with Saturday's moon - not quite full!
2. There's a circle of trees in the south end of the park. Never been completely sure what they are - possibly ash.
3. Some kind of pine. One of quite a few unnamed around the park.
4. Hedgerow with new leaf buds forming.

Looking for garden colour in an otherwise brown time of year.

1. Helleborus hybrids. These are always shy and face downwards, making it difficult to see inside the flower. But worth getting your knees wet whilst looking.

2. Cornus sanguinea ‘Anny’s Winter Orange’. Some plants look as if they have been plugged into the mains and the various varieties of cornus will always show off wherever you plant them.

3. Edgeworthia chrysantha - Paperbush. These are strange looking things, but have a light scent to add to the show.

Mistletoe growing in an orchard in Monmouthshire.

A long list of beliefs, uses and traditions are linked with mistletoe. The Romans associated it with peace, love and understanding and hung it over doorways as protection.

And later it became associated with Christmas, where lovers might kiss under a sprig. Or used as protection against demons and witches.

Whichever one you might choose, hopefully it will carry into 2025. Happy New Year folks!
