Drawing Dark Waters

Printing my Thames photos taken since 1997 and presenting them in three volumes. Part of the Drawing Dark Waters project with Caroline Underwood and Liz Charsley. A few have previously appeared in exhibitions or concertina book form, but this is the first time I’ve put them all in one place. Essentially archival inkjet prints, with some as gate folds and a couple of original prints from 1997. I’ve promised to show them to a few people, and am happy to show others. The project is still evolving and will no doubt be expanded.

Castanea sativa or sweet chestnut

Castanea sativa or sweet chestnut – from Old Men of the Woods portfolio at Wisley. Around 100 to 150 years old, these could live up to 700 years. So, like the Giant Redwoods, mere teenagers. Both of these trees are in the area threatened by the A3 widening scheme. Although the fruit has become part of winter or Christmas tradition, the chestnut is not a native species and is thought to have been introduced to the British Isles by the Romans. The Old Men Of The Woods

In 2007 I took photographs for a folio called ‘Pinhole Impressions’, which is a record of trees at RHS Wisley using a pinhole camera. I was lucky enough to have this exhibited at both Kew and Wisley at the time. 10 years on, some of these trees are under threat from the proposed development of the M25 and A3 road junction. With the help of the folk at Wisley, I have started a new project with the working title ‘The Old Men Of The Woods’ recording some of the 500 trees that could be lost. Some are rare, some are […]

From the archive – Reims Circuit

Never published at the time, a selection of black and white images taken at the old race circuit at Reims, Northern France in September 1988, whilst on a shoot for Classic and Sportscar Magazine.  We were photographing some classic Jaguars, including the XK 120 from The National Motor Museum, Gaydon. Reims was our playground for the afternoon, after French Police closed all surrounding roads to allow us to drive the old circuit. The circuit was closed in the late 1960’s, and has been left pretty much in its original state. (Click on any image to see full size gallery)

From Holmes to Sherlock by Mattias Boström

A new book cover using one of my photographs, via Millennium Images. Published by Grove Atlantic, Mattias Boström examines the story from its origins with a young Arthur Conan Doyle, through to the TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch. The image was taken near Battersea on the Thames footpath..not sure if there’s a connection.
